Sean Malone wrote:I've always been interested in embracing a diverse selection of music, both as a composer and as a performer. Of course, every composer has his or her own opinion, and there are things that I would choose to do differently (especially in terms of mixing). I was dismayed with the mix of TiA -- 85% of the bass work is barely audible, and the rhythmic/propulsive elements were entirely mitigated, the detail of the counterpoint and voice-leading are gone. I like to think that these are elements that contribute greatly to the overall sound of the band. And when you work so hard to create something, then the CD does not accurately reflect that work, it is very damaging to that delicate sense of trust — a realization that you may not share the same musical ideals anymore. I'm hoping one day for a re-mix, where everyone can hear how things were originally intended. The re-mix for Rock Band gives you a taste of the things that you are missing. And, it's not about me just wanting to hear myself louder, it's about the larger musical picture — the sense of balance in the rhythm section, especially.
...Cynic" today—I think by design—is less a band than it is Paul and Sean, and that they prefer it that way (I'm not speaking for them). I don't know to what extent there will be future recordings, much less that I'll even be on them. But I would characterize Carbon-Based Anatomy as being a kind of tone-poem; perhaps not in the strict orthodox sense, but certainly in the spirit of expressing a through-composed musical idea set to a single concept/story. Though some may say C-BA lacks some of the complexity associated with Cynic, I also think that—similar to poetry—we have expressed some meaningful musical ideas with fewer, more expressive "words" so-to-speak. Whether that is extended into the future is anybody's guess.
About playing with Cynic: I wouldn't say 'never', but, it's something that everyone would need to be comfortable with for it to happen. It's difficult, but not impossible, for me to imagine circumstances where everything would fall into place.
